Sergio Sebastiani

Cardinal Sergio Sebastiani ( born April 11, 1931 in Monte Monaco, Ascoli Piceno, Italy) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Sergio Sebastiani was a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica and studied philosophy and Catholic theology, he received in 1956 the sacrament of Holy Orders. First, he graduated from the licentiate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received his doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University in the Faculty of Canon Law, and later graduated from the preparatory service for the diplomatic career. After spells in Peru, Brazil and Chile, he worked in the Vatican Secretariat of State as an employee of several cardinals.

Pope Paul VI. 27 September 1976 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Mauretania and Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Madagascar and Mauritius with responsibilities for the islands of Réunion and the Comoros. He received his episcopal consecration Jean -Maria Cardinal Villot on 30 October of the same year. Pope John Paul II appointed him on 8 January 1985 for the Apostolic Nuncio in Turkey.

In November 1994 he was appointed General Secretary of the Central Committee in preparation for the Holy Year 2000. Since 1997 he was president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.

John Paul II took Sergio Sebastiani on 21 February 2001 as a cardinal deacon with the title of S. Eustachio diakonia in the College of Cardinals to.

Sergio Sebastiani was a participant in the conclave of 2005, in which Benedict XVI. was chosen.

On April 12, 2008 Benedict XVI accepted. Sebastianis reasons of age pre- mounted resignation from the office of President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See at.

On 21 February 2011, he was charged while maintaining his pro hac vice declared for titular church diaconal titles cardinal priest.
