Setra

Setra is a trademark of Daimler AG, which is distributed by the 100-percent subsidiary EvoBus in Europe at Daimler Buses. Kässbohrer vehicle plants built in Ulm buses under the brand name Kässbohrer Setra until the company ran into financial difficulties and the bus division in 1995 had to sell to Daimler -Benz. The name Setra derives from the word " self-supporting" from.

History

One of the first buses with a self-supporting, inherently stable and sufficiently rigid body developed Otto Kässbohrer in 1951. In this construction on a base frame (chassis ) could be dispensed with. While up to this point other bus and coach builders had not yet made the breakthrough unibody designs, the construction method of the Setra S 8, the foundation stone of Kässbohrer later success with the brand Setra was.

In the 1950s Kässbohrer exported 200 Setra buses called Golden Eagle Silver Eagle or the United States. The vehicles had a not usual for Europe equipment level.

The first Series S 6 to S 15 was built until 1967. In 1967 the 100 series with a much more angular appearance, the models S 80 to S 150 and next to another of the articulated SG 180 came from the market. The first or first two digits indicate respectively the number of rows of seats. To start the vehicles had independently suspended front wheels in double wishbone design. 1973 came disc brakes on the front axle in series, drum brakes were optional. The 100 series was, like their predecessors, equipped with Henschel engines.

In 1972, the S 200 on the market, equipped with a 235 kW engine from Daimler -Benz. Toilet, kitchen and air conditioning were possible. The today Setra general ventilation came on the market. This makes use of the natural pressure distribution obtained by a driving bus. Above the side window enters the fresh air. In the height of the driver's door and front access door, there is negative pressure, where the air is passed out of the vehicle. This gives a high airflow without it pulls the passengers.

As of 1976, the 200 series was produced. It is somewhat more rounded than the 100 series, and has an undivided windshield. At the launch there were two types of high-floor and high-deck buses in the versions S 211 H, S 212 H, S 213 H and S 215 H and S 213 HD and S 215 HD. The high-floor vehicles were then fitted with front and rear door, the high wing, front and middle door. Later, there were two versions with front door and is available with middle or rear door. Later, so-called super high-decker were added, which are even higher than the ordinary high-wing, and so offer a very large storage space. These super high-decker have the name Appendix HDH or HDS and are three-axle. The smallest of this series is the S 208 HM, the largest of the double-decker S 228 DT. Kässbohrer was the first commercial vehicle manufacturer in 1984 a standard ABS. Some time even you could get the Setra without ABS, Kässbohrer put it: " ... on request at a nominal charge ." The 200 series has been the most variants Setra series. The S 215 HD has become the most typical of the whole series SETRA 200 This type of vehicle was also the benchmark for all other coaches in the European market. The 200 were driven predominantly with V6, V8 and V10 engines from Daimler -Benz, later with turbocharger and MAN engines were offered. With the 200 series, there was another vehicle variants for the U.S. market, recognized the split windshield, equipped with Detroit Diesel engines and Allison automatic transmissions. The S 215 NR, the first low- floor intercity was derived from the 200 series. This design is now considered " low-entry " known ( low entrance, but conventionally built at the rear).

Another unusual type is the S 216 HDS, a super high-decker with underfloor cockpit. Because of the small numbers of this type has been modified only slightly offered as S 316 HDS, while new series has sold 300. The S 216 HDS is the successor of the SG 221 HDS, a super high-decker articulated bus, remained between the front car and trailer and a single piece with " wasp waist ".

As of 1991, the 300 series has been developed. The typical exterior mirrors of the series was an elaborate monitoring feature: except immediately befindliches behind the bus was carrying the blind spot in front of the front bumper in view of the driver. Since the merger with Mercedes -Benz city buses were hired and Setra assigned to the segment of the intercity buses and coaches. In intercity buses, the low-floor technology (type names " NF " ) put more and more by.

The first buses of the 400 series came in 2001 on the market. They are divided into product lines multiclass ( intercity buses ), Comfort Class ( coaches) and TopClass ( comfortable coaches, including the double-decker S 431 DT). The TopClass 400 would be revised in 2007.

2012 Coach of the Comfort Class 500 were introduced (S 515 HD, S 516 HD, S 517 HD), whose bodies have been extended for the applicable from 2017 ECE R66/01 and aerodynamically improved. Headlights and windscreen wipers have been newly developed.

2013 began with high-deck in three lengths (S 515 HDH, S 516 HDH, S 517 HDH ), the generation change in the TopClass and adapted for future strength and emission standards and aerodynamically efficient, the noise level lowered in the interior and reduces shell mass.

In the Turkish Evobus plant the production of 2013 featured multi- class 400 was added business. These are simple equipped intercity buses in three lengths. The concept is similar to built in the same factory Mercedes -Benz Integro.

Production

The entire range of buses and coaches of the Setra brand, is produced in Neu-Ulm. The bodies and chassis are produced in EvoBus Mannheim plant, transported by rail to New Ulm and assembled there, painted and finished. The Neu-Ulm plant took operating in 1992. Since 2006, the production activities are located there, which took place earlier in Ulm. Since 2009, the administration is housed in Neu -Ulm.

Besides Setra also includes the bus division of Mercedes -Benz to EvoBus, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Daimler Group. The model series Integro Travego and Mercedes -Benz are sister products that use in chassis and drive a variety of the same components and are also produced in Neu-Ulm. The since 2004, delivered to the U.S. company Academy Bus S 417 Setra wear next to the logo of the Mercedes star.

Type designation

The type designation contains the maximum number of seat rows can be seen. In the first Setra series, the number of rows of seats stood alone. In the second series (Series 100 ) for the following series (series 200, 300 and 400) was a 0 or 5 are added, each preceded by a number. Example: S 8 (= 8 rows of seats ), S 140 ( = 14 rows of seats ), S 215 ( = 15 rows of seats ), S 417 ( = 17 seats ) or S 319 UL ( = 19 rows of seats ). By comfort internals or a particular star classification, the rows of seats decrease; but the type designation is retained. From the 200 series gave additives according to the number the equipment to: date (Series 400/500 ), these are H for high floor construction ( no wheel wells in the passenger compartment ), HD for high-wing, HDH for high High Decker, DT for double-decker Tourist Bus, GT for coach ( Grand Tourisme ), UL for Überlandlinienbus and NF for low-floor. Previously HDS SL for city buses and NR ( low-floor Rational ) for the first cross-country low-floor buses ( 200 series ) were also used for super high-decker used. Only a few types were given different names, such as the S 250 Special ( a modified S 215 HD, which was further offered after the presentation of the 300 series as an entry model ) and the S 300 NC ( an early low-floor city bus as a predecessor of the Mercedes -Benz Citaro ).

The various models of the 200 series contributed to the type designations or names additives, which initially has the designation " International" was ( with additional letter I in the model number ) used for travel and cargo-passenger with simplified heating / ventilation. For regular services, there were the terms " communal" and " Regional", for travel Combi models, the term " rational ". The briefly offered Clubbusmodell based on the S 210 H wore notwithstanding the additional name "Real". Air-conditioned high-decker buses were called by default "optimal ", the super high-decker S 216 HDS "Royal" and the double-decker S 228 DT "Imperial". The export version of the 215 HDH for the U.S. market ( it was later inspired the HDH model for the local market ) was referred to as " Transcontinental ". In part, these names still held at the introduction of the 300 series, as for the S 328 DT, no later than the introduction of the 400 series, these names additives were abandoned with the division into " multi ", " Comfort " and " TopClass ". The additional term " business" held in Turkey since 2013 manufactured models with simpler equipment.
