Sévaz is a municipality in the district Broye the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Geography

Sévaz is located on 492 m above sea level. M., 2.5 km east-southeast of the district main town Estavayer -le- Lac (air line). The village is located on the plateau of the broad ridge between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyeebene, in the north-western Fribourg plateau.

The area of ​​2.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the ridge that separates Lake Neuchatel from the Broyeebene. The largest part of the area is flat and extends north to the hallway Champ de Lune, in the east to the skin Champ de Bory ( 500 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Sévaz ). To the south extends the community over the forest floor Fin de la Rape in the Talniederung of Arignon (left side of the creek Petite Glane ). Population

With 249 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Sévaz one of the small communities of the Canton of Fribourg. Of the 89.7% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 6.2 % and 1.4 % speak English (as of 2000). The population of Sévaz amounted in 1900 to 77 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated in the range of 80 to 110 residents. Since 1980 ( 86 inhabitants ) is a rapid population growth was associated with a doubling of the population recorded in 20 years.

Economy

Sévaz was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. The nearest links to the A1 motorway (Lausanne -Bern ), which was opened in 2001 and runs through the municipality, is located approximately 3 km from the center. By Bus Transports Publics Fribourgeois, which runs from Estavayer -le- Lac as a circular course, Sévaz is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1056 under the name Silva. Later, the names Selva ( 1230), Seyva ( 1337), Siva (1668 ) and Sévaz (1849 ) published. The place name is derived from the Latin word silva (forest ).

Since the Middle Ages Sévaz was under the rule Estavayer, but also had the bishops of Lausanne land on the communal land. In the 12th century a small priory was founded in Sévaz, which belonged to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard. After Bern 1536 had conquered the Vaud, Sévaz the Bailiwick Estavayer was assigned. After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) belonged to the village during the Helvetic Republic and the subsequent time to the district Estavayer before it was incorporated in 1848 in the District Broye. By a great fire in the night from 2nd to October 3, 1847, many houses were affected.

Attractions

The Chapel of Saint -Nicolas de Myre is mentioned since the 14th century and was extensively restored 1774-75. Today it has provided with impressive modern stained glass windows.
