Seversk

Sewersk (Russian Северск ) is a closed city ( SATO ) with 108 590 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Tomsk Oblast in Russia. It is located in Siberia, on the right bank of the river Tom, 13 kilometers northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Tomsk.

History

The foundation of the city took place in 1949 on the occasion of the construction of the nuclear facility Tomsk. In Sewersk plutonium production was operated for nuclear plants and nuclear weapons. Economy

Main employer in the town is the chemical industry with the " Siberian Chemical Combine GP" ( SCGP ) with 15,000 to 20,000 employees today. The nuclear plant is part of the combine. On April 6, 1993, there was a serious radioactive accident in which a tank of the SCGP exploded with a highly radioactive solution.

European nuclear waste

In October 2009 the documentary film " Nightmare nuclear waste " announced that France since the 90s outsourced a portion of its nuclear waste from the plants of the Electricité de France (EDF) in Sewersk.
