The Seversky Donets (Ukrainian Сіверський Донець, Russian Северский Донец / Seversky Donets, usually just called the Donets ) is a right 1053 km long tributary of the Don in southwestern Russia and in eastern Ukraine ( Eastern Europe).

The river, whose catchment area covers 98,900 km ², is named after the tribe of the Sewerjanen (Russian Северяне ).

Name of the river

The river has several " unofficial" names and descriptions: In Russian, he is also known as Little Don ( Малый Дон ). Occasionally, linguistically and geographically incorrect German translation " Northern Donets " is used to delineate the river from Don. Mostly, however, the short form Donets is used.

Course

From the Seversky Donets river of 950 km are in Ukraine. It rises about 100 km north of Belgorod and ends just south of Ust- Donezki. Headwaters and mouth are both in Russia.

The Seversky Donets built in the south of the highlands of the Central Russian plate near the Kursk Oblast. In the course of Belgorod before he has a very low gradient.
