Sevsk, Bryansk Oblast

Sevsk (Russian Севск ) is a small town in the Bryansk Oblast (Russia) with 7282 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 150 km south of Bryansk Oblasthauptstadt Sew on the river in the river system of the Dnieper.

Sevsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1146 as named after the river settlement Sewsko of the Principality of Chernigov documented.

From 1356 the town belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, came to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1585 and was for two centuries one of the most important strongholds in this part of the country ( the so-called Gorodok, town, existed until 1780). 1634 held the fortress of a two-week siege by Polish-Lithuanian troops stood. After 1698 became part of the Strelets who had participated at the so-called Second Great Strelizenaufstand against Peter, exiled to Sevsk.

1778 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) was awarded. After the loss of their military importance, the city became a regional trading center.

During World War II Sevsk was occupied on October 1, 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and temporarily recaptured on March 2, 1943 by troops of the Central Front of the Red Army. On March 27, 1943, the Wehrmacht succeeded once again to conquer the city until it was finally taken on 27 August 1943 by troops of the Central Front during advancement to Chernihiv and Pripyat.

Culture and sights

In Sevsk the Assumption Church ( Вознесенская церковь / Wosnessenskaja Tserkov ) are from 1765, the Peter and Paul's Church ( Петропавловская церковь / Petropawlowskaja Tserkov ) of 1809 and церковь the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan, short Kazan Church ( Казанская / Kazanskaya Tserkov ) of 1760 survived, as well the bell towers of the former Assumption Cathedral ( Успенский собор / Uspensky sobor ) of 1811 and the Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор церковь / Troitsky sobor ) of in 1782. Many houses date from the second half of the 19th century.

The city has a museum of local history.

Near the city is located, which was founded in 1631 as a fortress Saviour's Transfiguration Monastery ( Спасо - Преображенский монастырь / Spaso- Preobrazhensky monastyr ).

Economy and infrastructure

In Sevsk as the center of an agricultural area companies in the food industry dominate (particularly fruit and vegetables ).

Sevsk is located on the M3 highway Moscow - Bryansk - Ukrainian border and on to Kiev.
