Sigolsheim

Sigolsheim is a commune with 1201 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes de la Vallée de Kaysersberg.

Geography

The community Sigolsheim on the Alsace Wine Route is situated in the Upper Rhine Plain, about eleven miles north- west of Colmar, on the edge of the Vosges. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

History

Sigolsheim was first mentioned in writing as " Sigoltmarca " in the year 768, but there are accounts of an earlier settlement ( Roman villa).

1944/45, the place during the fighting for the bridgehead Alsace (French Poche de Colmar ) was strongly affected. A national military cemetery on Blood Mountain is reminiscent of that time. The almost completely destroyed Romanesque church of St. Peter, built around 1200, was built from 1950 to 1960 again.

Since 1967, the place with the Emperor Burkheim chair, today a district of Vogt castle in the Emperor chair on the other side of the Rhine, in a partnership.

Personalities

  • Andreas Räss (1794-1887), German theologian and bishop of the diocese of Strasbourg (1842-1887), was born in Sigolsheim.
