Simeria

Simeria ( German fishing village or Pischk, Hungarian Piski or Piskitelep ) is a city in Hunedoara County in Romania.

Location

Simeria located at the junction of the river Strei in the Maros ( Mures German ), south of the Transylvanian Erzgebirge. The district capital Deva is located approximately 10 kilometers west of Simeria away.

History

Simeria was first documented in 1276. For a long time the city - which belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania and to Austria - Hungary until 1918 - quite insignificant. In the 19th century took them through their convenient position a boom that extends through the commissioning of the railway line Arad - Alba Iulia in 1868 still increased. A few years later, two other railway lines were built (after Petrosani and Hunedoara ), so that Simeria became an important railway hub in western Transylvania Simeria to the south. To the train station and the yard around a new settlement, which was significantly larger than the original developed village. This was around 1900, the Hungarian name Ópiski (Romanian Simeria Veche; " veche " = old). In the following decades Simeria was coined economically especially from the railway. Since 1918/20 is one of the place to Romania. In 1952 he was awarded the status of a city. Other important sectors are the construction materials extraction, marble and wood processing.

Population

1850 were registered on the territory of today's 2,419 residents, who all lived in the present six local villages; the present town did not exist. About 90 % were Romanians. The railway construction and economic development led to the influx of other nationalities, particularly from Hungary. When - however controversial - Census in 1910 the population had risen to 7,607, of which 3,889 identified themselves as Hungarians, Romanians and 3,442 as 200 as German. 3,099 people were living in the " Bahnhofsiedlung ". By 1992, a further population increase was recorded ( 14,311 ). Since then, the population has been declining slowly. As of the 2002 census lived in Simeria 13,895 people, including 11,354 in the city proper, and 2,541 in the local villages. 13,430 identified themselves as Romanians, 420 as Hungary, 99 and 94 as Roma than German.

Besides the above mentioned rail links Simeria has a regular bus service to Deva. Through the city's European roads lead 68 and 79
