Sittard-Geleen

Sittard- Geleen ( listen? / I ) is a city in the Netherlands, Limburg province, with 94 047 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Their total area is slightly more than 81 km ².

For the merged city is the city of Sittard, Geleen industrial town, the villages Born, Limbricht and Munstergeleen and many smaller towns. Since 27 January 2005, the cities merger is official.

Location and economic

The city is located in the south of the province, bordering Germany, Belgium and the municipalities Beek, Echt-Susteren, dandruff and stone. Sittard has a station on the railway lines from Heerlen and Maastricht Roermond and Eindhoven in the urban areas of the Netherlands. Several freeways run through the community, in particular the line Utrecht - Eindhoven - Maastricht and the track lions - Aachen - Cologne.

Sittard- Geleen has one of the most important industrial zones all over the Netherlands. In Geleen are the big rigs of chemical companies SABIC and DSM, the latter is from the former Dutch State Mines ( coal mining, in 1971 completed) has emerged. Also available in Born, the largest car factory of the Netherlands, Nedcar. Also, the Philips group here has an operation. In addition there are several supply-, commercial, and service companies.

The old Sittard

Sittard in 1243 received a city charter, a long time was the Duchy of Jülich and was assigned to the Netherlands after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. During the Belgian revolt (1830-1839) the city was temporarily Belgium.

In the city the St. Peter's Church stands out. The church was built in the 13th - 15th Century, it was restored in 1875 by the architect Pierre Cuypers Roermonder in neo-Gothic style. In Sittard are still some churches and monastic buildings and a few houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Parts of the city walls are still preserved.

The city is a stronghold of the carnival.

Twin Cities

The partnership Böblingen, Baden- Württemberg with the district Geleen existed since 1962. According to the merger of the total city Sittard -Geleen in 2001 and the cities about Böblingen partnership was reaffirmed. Even with Hasselt in Belgian Limburg is twinned since 1980.
