Skálavík

Skálavík [ skɔalavʊik ] ( Danish name: Skålevig ) is a place of the Faroe Islands on the east coast of the island Sandoy.

The present-day stone church dates from 1891, and the boat harbor from the 70s of the 20th century. Beginning of each July there is a festival called Sandoyarstevna, a kind of mini - Ólavsøka.

In the village there is a board and a snack. There is a hiking trail to Húsavík in the south.

In August 2006 it was reported that Skálavík may want to get a sports and leisure center for the whole of Sandoy.

End of January 2008 Skálavík was hit by a major hurricane. The harbor, houses and boats were destroyed. The damage was so great that emergency relief was provided from Iceland.

Personalities

Hedin Brú (1901-1987) and Kristian Osvald VIDERO (1906-1988) are the best known Skálavíkingar ( as the locals are called ). Hedin Brú we owe the first Faroese novel which has been translated into many other languages; and VIDERO the completion of the Faroese translation of the Bible.
