Slatina, Romania

Slatina is the county capital of the district Olt in the Great Wallachia in Romania. The city on the river Olt had about 78,500 inhabitants in 2007.

History

The name is derived from the Slavic word Slatina Slam - tina and means something like salty land, beyond even the Latin, the term is used Salatina. The first documentary mention of the city took place in 1368 when the local customs station was built.

Industry

In the city is settled with the company ALRO the largest aluminum plant of southeastern Europe. The Olt River is dammed after its exit from the Carpathians by several dams. In Slatina, there are two such reservoirs, which serve to generate electricity.
