Smolnícka Huta

Smolnícka Huta ( German Schmöllnitzhütte or Schmöllnitzer hut, Hungarian Szomolnokhuta - to 1902 Szomolnokhutta ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia. It lies in the valley of the river Smolník in the northeastern foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains, about 22 km from Gelnica and closes northeast of the place Smolník.

As part of Schmöllnitz ( Smolník ) the place was first mentioned in 1681, but was only in 1828 as a freelance mountain town. It evolved to a processing facility of the mined here and in the surrounding ores, especially for copper, mercury, lead, silver and iron. 1863, a blast furnace was built, this can still be seen today as a ruin.

Above the village rises on a hill, the Catholic church in the Romanesque Revival style of 1751, which was built on the foundations of an older system. The tower was renovated in 1924. The area around the site is densely wooded; especially spruce dominate the nature here.

From 1884 to 1965 was the site of the endpoint Göllnitztalbahn of Margecany.

By the end of World War II lived in the place especially German -speaking inhabitants ( 1930: 879 German of 1069 inhabitants ), today ( 2001 census ), 84% of the population Slovaks, 8% and 4% German Gypsies.
