Social Democratic Union of Macedonia

The Social Democratic League of Macedonia ( Macedonian Sojuz na Makedonija Socijaldemokratski Социјалдемократски сојуз на Македонија; Acronym: SDSM ) is a political party in Macedonia with social democratic orientation. The SDSM is a full member of the Socialist International.

History

The SDSM was founded as a successor party to the League of Communists of Macedonia ( maz. Sojuzot na na Makedonija Komunistite ) on 20 April 1991.

The SDSM ruled Macedonia from 1992-1998 and from 2002-2006 in different coalitions and each was the strongest party in parliament. In the parliamentary elections of 2006 the party suffered a heavy defeat and went to go into opposition to. At the party congress on November 5, 2006 Radmila Sekerinska was elected the new party leader after the party leadership had former chairman Vlado Bučkovski pronounced distrust after the poor election result. Between 2004 and 2009, was Branko Crvenkovski President of Macedonia. After being voted out he was party leader of the Social Democrats and held this post until April 2013.
