Socket AM2 is the successor to Socket 754 and Socket 939 Socket 754 The however was for a time continued for the Sempron and AMD Turion 64, while the base 939 disappeared fairly quickly from the market.

With slight improvements occurred in the fall of 2007 on the Socket AM2 successor to the AM2. Both sockets are mechanically and electrically compatible, so ( K10 on such basis) are available on motherboards with Socket AM2 processors also for Socket AM2, however, partly with reduced function and possibly scope.
