Somali parliamentary election, 1969

The parliamentary elections in March 1969 were the last free elections in Somalia before the same year Siad Barre took power and forbade all parties.

Simultaneously, the local elections were held.

Nearly 900,000 voters cast their votes. The Somali Youth League reached 33.24 % share of votes 73 seats, the Somali National Congress eleven, the Hizbia Mustaqil Dastur al - Sumal eight, the Somali African National Union ( SANU ) six, the Partito Liberal Giovani Somali ( PLGs ) and the three SDU to two. 38.79 % of the votes were distributed among other parties who together won 20 seats. Often it was pursued by a few representatives who stood as candidates for their respective communities.

As with the 1964 elections, a majority of has gone before was deselected ( 77 of 123 ).

Several candidates changed after the election of the successful parties. Thus the fraction of the SYL grew at the end of May in 1969 by 73 to 109 deputies. By forming a coalition with the eleven representatives of the SNC SYL finally came up with 120 of the 123 seats.
