St. George (TTC)

St. George is an underground subway station in Toronto, at the intersection of Bloor Street and St. George Street. Here the Yonge- University - Spadina line and the Bloor- Danforth line of the Toronto Subway intersect. The station is used daily by an average of 239 660 passengers (2009 /10), with which it is the second most frequented of the entire network after Bloor- Yonge. Both levels of the station have a central platform. In the vicinity are the Bata Shoe Museum, the northern part of the site of the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music.

History

The opening of the station on 28 February 1963, together with the Union -St section. George of the University Line. This section was mainly in south-north direction parallel to the Yonge Line. Although the terminus of St. George was in the city center in the middle, they could make their full market value for the time being not develop because there was no connection to another subway line. In contrast, sailed numerous trams existing since 1953 turning loop immediately before the station, providing passengers spared the walk to some distant Bloor Street.

With the opening of the section Keele - Woodbine Bloor Danforth Line on February 26, 1966, St. George was transformed into a major interchange station. On the same day, the tram line along Bloor Street was shut down, the turning loop was replaced by a building of the Teachers' College Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The TTC took on 28 January 1978, traffic on the Spadina line from St. George to Wilson; by the Yonge- University - Spadina Line was born. This extends to the adjacent station SPADINA parallel to Bloor Danforth line but at two different levels.
