Description

Stachys species are mostly erect, annual or perennial herbaceous plants, rarely subshrubs, or small shrubs. Sometimes rhizomes are formed as outlasting.

In dense Scheinquirlen that are in the axils of bract -like leaves pairs of leaves, the flowers are arranged. However, the inflorescence is not particularly separated from the leafy stem. It is typical flowers of the Lamiaceae. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and fünfzählig with double perianth. The five green sepals are fused to Roehrig bell-shaped. The color of the petals are different, depending on the type reddish, pink, yellow or white. Upper and lower lips are always available. The upper lip is flat, at least not severely eroded more or less. The four stamens protrude from the corolla tube, but not protrude beyond the upper lip. The only different flowers feature is that the stamens, at least the two outer, are rotated at the latest towards the end of flowering and bent outward.

The fruit is divided into three edged Klausen.

Systematics and distribution

Etymology

The German name Betony is a märkisches loanword from Sorbian. The word-initial with š archetype originates in more detail directly čisćik the Upper Sorbian. The ts- initial sound was shaped by the usual means in Märkischen transformation of (t ) in š ts in loanwords from the Wendish. This change is also reflected in the low Wendish cysć, as well as in the Czech čistek, in Polish and Russian czyściec Чистец. The Scientific name Stachys, however, derives from the Indo-European * stengh or * stngh ( = sting ) from, from this root also comes from the Latin spica ( = the ear ). The name refers to the pseudo-spikes, forming the genus.

Phylogenesis

The types of Betonien ( Betonica ) are treated by some authors as part of the genre of Zieste ( Stachys ), for example, in the Flora Europaea. Recent molecular studies have shown that the Betonien are only distantly related to the Ziesten and are not even in the same tribe Stachydeae. These studies have also shown that the genus Stachys in the current boundary is not monophyletic.
