Stans is a municipality and the capital of the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland.

Geography

Stans is located between the mountains and Stanserhorn Buochserhorn and the western foothills of the guarantor Stocks. Neighboring municipalities are Ennetmoos and Stansstad in the West, Oberdorf, Ennetburgen and Buochs ​​the east and Dallenwil in the south, where Stansstad, Ennetburgen and Buochs ​​are on Lake Lucerne.

History

The Gallo -Roman cremation burials dating from the 2nd century BC, the earliest traces of human presence in Nidwalden. The name Stans, which is itself derived from the Latin word Stagnum ( pond, stagnant water ) is another indication of this. The village was first mentioned in 1172. 1798 Stans was attacked by French troops, as Nidwalden rebelled against the new constitution of Napoleon Bonaparte. In this event, the teacher Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi has started to become orphans in his first school. The Nidwaldner rural community was held in Oberndorf until its abolition in 1997.

Demographics

The population grew in the 1850s sharply. In the following decade, the growth leveled off a bit, but increased from the 1870s back strongly. Overall, the population grew 1850-1900 to 921 persons or 49.1 %. Between 1910 and 1930, stagnated in the number of residents. From 1930 to today, followed by a steady growth. Today the community has almost 8,000 inhabitants. In 2008 alone it grew by 210 persons or 2.8%. Languages

1893 opened the Stanserhorn -Bahn ( SthB ), a funicular that leads to the Stanserhorn. About which opened in the same year Electric Tram Stansstad Stans ( StSt ) was associated with the steamboats of Lake Lucerne in Stansstad.
