History

Star Cruises was founded as a subsidiary of Genting Group in Malaysia, on 10 November 1993 in Bermuda and has its headquarters in Hong Kong. The first ships of the company were two ferries from the holdings of the bankrupt Swedish Rederi AB Slite. In the following years, Star Cruises bought several other used ships. In 1998, Star Cruises was awarded the first own newbuilding, the Superstar Leo, the sister ship SuperStar Virgo followed in the following year.

In 2000, Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCL) purchased together with its subsidiaries Orient Lines and Norwegian Capricorn Line and thus became the first global cruise company. The Norwegian Capricorn Lines was shortly thereafter incorporated into the Star Cruises and dives since then no more than a brand name. Before buying the NCL Star Cruises had several new buildings being planned or under construction, this daughter of NCL but have been assigned. In August 2007, Star Cruises announced that a 50 % stake in NCL was sold to a U.S. private equity firm Apollo Management.

In 2001, Star Cruises founded a new subsidiary Cruise Ferries, which took first with a ship, the Wasa Queen, short cruises from Hong Kong to Xiamen.

The ships were to be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg. In 2000, the ships were canceled again and instead of 2005, the ships Norwegian Jewel and Pride of Hawaii were asked for Norwegian Cruise Line in service.

Since the Norwegian Cruise Line proved to be more profitable than sailing under its own brand name Star Cruises ships, there is since 2006 the trend to build new ships for the NCL and assign the resulting replace older ships of the Star Cruises fleet in Asia.
