The Norwegian Jewel is a cruise ship of Norwegian Cruise Line. It corresponds to the Panamax category and is the lead ship of the " Jewel " class. The ship was built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg ( Germany ), and transferred on 25 June 2005 on the Ems in Eemshaven.

After commissioning in August 2005, the Norwegian Jewel was baptized on 3 November 2005 at the Port of Miami. Melania Knauss was godmother, wife of Donald Trump.

Machinery and drive

The Norwegian Jewel is equipped with a diesel-electric machinery. Five V -12- cylinder diesel engines of type MAN B & W 48/60B drive generators that supply the ship with electricity. The engine fuel consumption at cruising speed is approximately 220 liters / minute. With full tanks of fuel supply for about 10 days is enough. The propulsion system of the vessel consists of two built- in rear ABB " Azipod " propeller pods that can be rotated 360 °. The performance of the electric propeller motors is 19.5 MW each. For maneuvering in ports and at low speeds in the bow a triple - cross beam system is installed with a total capacity of 12.6 MW. For air conditioning and cooling the vessel has five air conditioners has a total output of 22.5 MW.

Cabins and onboard facilities

At twelve passenger decks are 1,188 cabins, 763 balcony staterooms and 27 disabled cabins that can accommodate up to 2,376 passengers. The peculiarity of the ship are very spacious suites and villas, which are among the largest of its kind at sea. The two villas in the category Garden Villa offer on an area of ​​408 m² per extensive facilities including butler service. The public areas include:

Use

Since 2012, Norwegian Jewel Alaska to the Panama Canal, the Bahamas and the Caribbean is traveling from Seattle. Between November 2013 and April 2014 New Orleans becomes the new base port for Caribbean cruises. The years before the ship sailed various application areas, including the Mediterranean, the Baltic, as well as Canada and New England.

Trivia

  • On board about 930 m³ of drinking water are consumed daily and produces approximately 2,800 m³ of fresh water.
  • For waste disposal are two incinerators available.
  • In the laundry, nine washing machines with a capacity of up to 115 kg, and nine Dryer in use.
  • The two anchors weigh twelve tons, the anchor chains are approximately 350 m long.
  • For the fire protection sprinkler nozzles provide a total of 6,800, 437 fire extinguishers ( including 40 in the machine room ) and seven fire stations.
  • During the construction of 1300 km and 105 km cable pipes were laid.
  • On the ship about 25,000 bulbs of various types are installed.
  • There are 835 exterior windows and interior doors in 1834 on board.
  • To paint a total of 18,100 liters of paint were used, 4,500 liters for the outer shell and 13,600 liters indoors.
  • The maximum capacity of all lifeboats and liferafts is 5,020 people.
