History

The history of the Pride of America, whose construction was overshadowed that of any other modern cruise ship mishaps and setbacks, began in March 1999, when the tour operator American Classic Voyages ( AMCV ) signed a contract with the shipyard Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc.. Under the name Project America two cruise ships to be built, which are used mainly in the waters around Hawaii. The company planned to invest over 1 billion U.S. $.

Construction and commissioning

The keel laying of the Project America, yard number 7671 took place at the shipyard Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. on October 10, 2000. While the ship was under construction, the client applied for on 19 October 2001 after the bankruptcy "Chapter 11" of the U.S. bankruptcy law. The reason, among others, fall in demand for cruises after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 was given.

In 2002, Norwegian Cruise Line acquired the approximately 40% completed shell and instructed the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, the ship about 25 meters to lengthen and eventually finish as Pride of America. Building materials, which were still at Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc., were partially brought in containers to Bremerhaven. Was the transfer to Bremerhaven Between 5 November and 13 December. In July 2003, the body lying in dry dock was cut apart and installed the new section. After completion of work, followed in November 2003, the movement of the ship at the outfitting quay.

On 14 January 2004, shortly before its completion, the Pride still lying at the outfitting the yard of America fell by a storm in a slightly inclined position. By mounting holes on the quay facing starboard side water penetrated so that the list was growing. The subsequent massive flooding flooded the four lower decks including the engine room and the ship sank to the bottom of the harbor. At the time of the accident to 14 shipyard workers were on board, but were unharmed. As the ship could not be completed as agreed in April, the Lloyd Werft had early February 2004 Insolvency Register. However, the shipping company and shipyard agreed to lift the ship, repair, and complete. The salvage work began on 13 February 2004. With the help of pumps, several tugboats and a salvage pontoon, the ship could be lifted. By the sinking machine and drive system were severely damaged and the electrical systems have been almost completely destroyed in the lower decks. Both propeller nacelles had to be replaced, the diesel engines were completely disassembled and installed after a complete overhaul again. The salvage and repair the damage took several months to complete and costing the insurers around 225 million U.S. $.

After the tests have been successfully completed in mid-May 2005, the Pride of America was finally on June 6, 2005 - two years later than originally planned - will be handed over to Norwegian Cruise Line. After the presentation of the ship was canceled due to various reasons, immediately after the transfer, the transfer began to New York. The editor of a trade magazine honored the achievements of the shipyard by distinguished the Pride of America as the " Ship of the Year 2005."
