Steffi Martin

Steffi Walter Martin ( born September 17, 1962 in Schlema ) is a former German luger.

In her home town of Lauterbrunnen in the Erzgebirge Steffi Martin began her athletic career at Dynamo SSG Lauter in athletics. In 1976 she moved to the section of the luge SC tractor Oberwiesenthal. She won the title at the Spartakiade 1979 and in 1981 became European Junior Champion in Bludenz. She was trained by Franz Schneider and Wilfried Juchert.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo and the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, she won the gold medal in each tobogganing. With these two victories at the Olympic Games it is one of the most successful beside Sylke Otto 's women at all. In 1983 in Lake Placid and 1985 in Oberhof, they were each World Champion, 1984 World Cup winner.

In 1984 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold; In 1988 she received an honorary clasp to this Order.

With her husband and three children, Walter Martin lives in Grossdubrau. Since 1998 she is an honorary citizen of Lauter.

After her athletic career, she worked as a physiotherapist. Due Chipped discs and wrists as late effects of their competitive sports career, she retired at the age of 45 years as Invalid.
