Stephen Dorrell

Stephen Dorrell ( born March 25, 1952 in Worcester, Worcestershire, England ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party, which is since 1979 member of the House of Commons and was among other things, Minister of National Heritage and Minister of Health.

Life

After visiting the school in Uppingham Dorrell studied at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. During his studies he was personal assistant in 1974 by Peter Walker, who was, among other trade and industry minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Edward Heath. In the general election of October 1974, he ran for the first time, but without success as a candidate of the Conservative Party in the constituency of Kingston -upon -Hull East for a seat in the House of Commons. Subsequently, he worked as a director in the family business, the clothing factory Faithfull Group Ltd..

In the general election of May 3, 1979, he was first elected in the constituency of Loughborough in the House and heard this since the Lower House elections of 1 May 1997 for the constituency of Charnwood.

During his long parliamentary membership, he was from 1983 to 1987, first Peter Walker, who was now Secretary of Energy in the cabinet of Margaret Thatcher, then Deputy Whip and 1988-1990 Whip of the Conservative government faction in the lower house.

In 1990 he became the first time a government official as a " junior minister" when he was appointed in the Ministry of Health to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State. Then he was between April 1992 and July 1994, Financial Secretary of the Treasury ( Financial Secretary to the Treasury ), and at the same time ex-officio member of the House of Commons Committee on public budgets.

In a cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister John Major appointed him in July 1994 as Minister of National Heritage ( Secretary of State for the National Heritage ) before he was transferred to another government reshuffle in July 1995, Minister of Health ( Secretary of State for Health ) and this office until to the electoral defeat of the Conservative Party held at the general election of 1 May 1997.

After that he was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet and his party was this to 1998 as " Shadow Minister for Education and Employment " on. Later he was from November 2005 to May 2010 member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Konsolodierungsgesetze and is a member of both the House Committee on Cooperation and Chairman of the Health Committee of the House since 2010. In the general election on 6 May 2010 Dorrell was re-elected with 49.53 percent of the votes in his constituency as a member of the House of Commons.
