Sture Allén

Sture Allén ( pronunciation: [ ˌ stʉ ː ɹə ale ː n], born December 31, 1928 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish linguist. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Gothenburg, where he has worked between 1972-93 with computational linguistics. Since 1980 he is a member of the Swedish Academy and had from 1986-99 where the Office of the Permanent Secretary held. He was one of the opponents in the Salman Rushdie affair, as a result Kerstin Ekman, Lars Gyllensten and Werner Aspenström left the academy. Furthermore, he is since 1976 member of the Kungliga Vetenskaps -och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg, since 1988 Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets academies, since 1994, the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and since 2000, the Finnish Academy of Sciences.

In the 1970s, he became known internationally for its pioneering work in the field of computational linguistics and lexigraphie. He has published in the years 1970-1980 the Nusvensk frekvensordbok ( Neuschwedische frequency dictionary ), in which more than 1 million words and phrases from the Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg dailies were electronically recorded and analyzed.
