Stuttgart Scorpions

The Stuttgart Scorpions are a Stuttgart club for American football in the German Football League ( GFL - German 1st league).

History

The Stuttgart Scorpions were founded in 1982 by Harold Kienitz. Already in 1985, the promotion to the 1st Bundesliga in which they remained for two years. After the descent 1987, the Scorpions in 1990 Master of the 2nd Bundesliga Süd, but could not continue due to a league reform. In 1991, the Scorpions, the renewed promotion to the 1st League, from which they descended again the following year.

1990 organized the Scorpions, the first American football game in the then still existing GDR in Leipzig and won in front of over 11,000 spectators against the first division Baden griffin.

1991 saw 4,000 spectators in the stadium the first Waldau Stuttgart Allstar Bowl against a college choice under the guidance of ex- NFL coach Sam Rutigliano ( Cleveland Browns ).

In 1994, the team reached the renewed rise to the top flight, today's German Football League.

After Harold Kienitz had resigned as chairman in late 1996, the Scorpions in 1997 landed in last place of the GFL -South. However, in two relegation matches against the then second division champions Saarland Hurricanes they made sovereign in the league.

In 1998, the Scorpions were surprising master of GFL -South and defeated the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in the play-off quarter-finals before they were eliminated against the Hamburg Blue Devils in front of 4200 spectators in the semifinals.

In the 2001 season, the Scorpions reached after a victory over the Dusseldorf Panthers the play-off semi-finals, giving them in the 2002 season, succeeded by a quarter-final victory against the Cologne Crocodiles again. In the 2006 season the Scorpions reached the semi-finals by beating the Dresden Monarchs, had to be there but the Braunschweig Lions defeated.

In the 2007 season, the Scorpions were for the second time after 1998 Master of GFL -South and beat the Hamburg Blue Devils in the playoff quarterfinals. Through a dramatic semi-final win against the Berlin Adler Scorpions reached in 2007 for the first time also the final of the German Bowl. The finale lost the Scorpions on home turf and 6340 spectators against the Braunschweig Lions.

In the 2008 season, the Scorpions took second place in the Southern group, after they had given this long, and received in the quarter-finals again the Berlin Adler, but resigned after a time of 6:9 from the play-offs.

In the 2009 season, the Scorpions took third place in the Southern group and in the quarter- finals of at the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes of the play-offs.

In the 2010 season the Scorpions finished fourth in the Southern group and lost in the quarterfinals again at the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, later the German Bowl winner, with just under 21:23.

In the 2011 season the Scorpions finished third in the Southern group. In the quarter- finals at the Mönchengladbach Mavericks led the Scorpions in the second quarter with 17:6, but in the end had to admit defeat with 17:43.

Association

From 1982 to 1996 Harold Kienitz led the club to which Klaus Mecherlein († 28 March 2008), Rolf Pommer, Hans -Joachim Scherb and Kurt followed Paul as chairman. Since November 2008 Ute Zielke is entrusted with the direction of the association. The long -standing still active in 2006, players were Patrick Fajfr ( Offense ) and Andreas Scholler (Defense). Schoeller plays since the club was founded in 1982 for the Scorpions and went in 2007 in his 25th season.

In 1999, the Scorpions own club, the ASC Stuttgart Scorpions, to preserve the independence of other sports clubs.

The Stuttgart Scorpions are known for their ambitious youth work. The Scorpions Youth therefore long been one of the most successful German youth teams and is a five-time German Youth runner-up. 1988 won the Scorpions youth with her ​​then- quarterback Patrick Faifr the Panda Bowl ( Tournament of the best six German youth teams ) with a final victory against the Berlin Adler.

Stadium

The Stuttgart Scorpions play their home games at the Gazi Stadium on the Waldau Stuttgart -Degerloch below the TV tower. The Gazi Stadium on the Waldau holds about 11,500 spectators.
