Suonenjoki

Suonenjoki [ suɔnɛnjɔki ] is a city in the Finnish Savo region, with 7500 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located in the countryside 50 km southwest of Savo Kuopio. Neighboring communities of Suonenjoki are Karttula in the north, Leppävirta in the east, Pieksämäki in the south, the west and Rautalampi Tervo in the northwest.

The city center also is divided into the districts of Harakkaniemi, Keskusta, Kirkkolanniemi, Kolmisoppi, Kopola, Käpylä, Lampientaipale, Mannilanpelto, Metsola, Pappilanpelto, Purola, Tervala, Yhteislaidun and Valkeisenmäki.

The State Road 9 ( E 63 ) of Jyväskylä Kuopio crosses Suonenjoki as well as the railway line from Kouvola after Iisalmi. On August 12, 1998, there arrived in the city a railway accident in which a passenger and a freight train collided and 25 people were injured.

The strawberry cultivation is the most important branch of Suonenjoki. Thus, refers to the city as "Strawberry town in Finland " and wears a strawberry leaf coat of arms. Every year in July, a "Strawberry Carnival " is organized in Suonenjoki. From 1995 to 2006, a further major event took place in the stand with the Metal festival Jörisrock.

Policy

Parish council

As in most rural areas of Finland is in Suonenjoki the rural - liberal Centre Party, the largest party. The council was also in the local elections in 2012 with about 40 % of the vote and 11 out of 27 deputies strongest force. The Social Democrats and the Left Alliance are represented by four seats in the municipal council. In addition, the right-wing populist True Finns and the conservative National Coalition Party are each represented by three seats in the municipal council. The Christian Democrats have two representatives.
