Å urany

Šurany ( until 1927 slovak " Veľké Šurany "; Hungarian Nagysurány; Schuran German ) is a town in southern Slovakia.

Geography

Location

The city is located about 10 km north of Nové Zámky the right bank and left the small Neutra Neutra at an altitude of 120 m to 125 m.

The neighboring municipalities are in the north Lipová, in the east Úľany nad Žitavou, to the south and west Banov Palárikovo (Upper Market).

Population

According to the results of the Census ( 2001) were 97.3 % Slovaks, 0.8 % Magyars, Czechs, 0.6% and 0.3 % Gypsies. The majority is Roman Catholic, 80 %, 14.8% are Protestants without commitment, 1.2%, other 3.3% did not respond.

History

It was first mentioned in 1183 for the first time as a villa Suran and was occupied by the Turks from 1683 to 1684. After 1725 the castle was razed, the city received in 1832 the status of a royal town and market rights.

Until 1918, the town belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award they came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.

From 1872 to 1918 as well as 1949 to 1960 she was also the seat of district administration.

Demographics

1910, according to an official census, 5,225 inhabitants, of whom 3,413 Slovaks, 1,626 Hungarians and 176 were German. In 2001, of the now 10,491 inhabitants at 97.3 %, to be Slovaks.

Traffic

The town is a railroad junction of the railway line Nové Zámky - Prievidza, railway Nové Zámky - Zvolen. From here run routes towards Bratislava ( Pressburg ), Nové Zámky ( Neuhäusel ), Nitra ( Neutra ), Levice ( Levice ) and Zlaté Moravce ( Goldmorawitz ). Through the village, the road 580 ( Palárikovo - Kalna ).
