Sven Thofelt

Sven Alfred Thofelt ( born May 19, 1904 in Stockholm; † 1 February 1993 Djursholm ) was a Swedish athlete and Olympic champion who has enjoyed success in the modern pentathlon and fencing.

Thofelt first participated at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 and won the gold medal in the modern pentathlon. Four years later in Los Angeles, he again took part in the pentathlon, but was only fourth. He also launched in épée fencing, but was able to win with a ninth place a medal there. At the Olympic Games in Berlin, he again took part in both disciplines, bringing in epee fencing with the team silver medal. In the pentathlon, he was again fourth, when for the first time in Olympic history, not a Swede, but the German Gotthard Handrick was victorious. After the Second World War he took at the age of 44 years once again with the team at the 1948 Olympic Games in London and took part in the epee fencing match the bronze medal. After his active career was Thofelt together with Gustaf Dyrssen founder and the first chairman, founded in August 1948 Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne ( UIPM ). He forced the introduction of a winter sports competition from cross-country skiing and shooting, beating even the name biathlon for the new sport before, the Association referred to the takeover by the International Biathlon Union in 1993 under the auspices of then as UIPMB ( Union de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon ) was performed. From 1960 to 1988 he was even President of UIPMB. For Sweden Thofelt was from 1970 to 1976 member of the International Olympic Committee. 1982 Olympic Medal he was awarded in silver.

Sven Thofelt is the father of Björn Thofelt, who was also modern pentathlete, and the artist and poet bites Thofelt.
