Svetlana Ulmasova

Svetlana Ulmassowa (Russian Светлана Ульмасова, English transcription Svetlana Ulmasova, . Born February 4, 1953 in the Uzbek SSR; † 6 April 2009) was a Soviet athlete. The long-distance runner had its greatest successes in the 3000 -meter run.

At the European Championships 1978 in Prague, she won the title in 8:33,2 min with a second ahead of the Romanian Natalia Mărăşescu. Four years later at the European Championships 1982 in Athens, she was able to defend their title successfully. With 8:30,28 min, it was three seconds before Maricica Puica, so again a Romanian. At the World Championships 1983 in Helsinki Ulmassowa was fourth, 8:35,55 min after they had less than a second behind the winner Mary Decker.

In the winter season Ulmassowa never served at European Indoor Championships. Instead, they ran at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Here she was fifth in 1979, sixth in 1980, seventh in 1981 and 1983 again Sixth. The Soviet team won gold in 1980 and 1981, and 1979 and 1983 silver.

1978, 1979 and 1982, she was Soviet champion in the 3000 m. In these three years, she was also the world each year best. In 1986, she won the Soviet title over 5000 m.
