Geography

The eponymous Acentejo is a balcony-like, steeply inclined region ( difference in altitude of 1,500 meters ) between the Teide massif and the rocky coast which slopes up to 300 m steeply to the Atlantic. The area is very fertile and well supplied with water, so that here grows lush vegetation. The total 2,442 -acre wine region lies at an altitude 50-1400 MT Sea level. The higher-lying vineyards are situated on the slopes of the 3,715 m high Mount Teide. The plots are created extremely kleingliedrig; A total of 2250 wine growers work to about 50 wineries and winegrowers.

The soils

The island of Tenerife was formed about seven to five million years ago by volcanic activity. In low-lying areas in the production area there are red, loamy soils with limestone and marl a share.

Climate

Tenerife, like all other islands of the Canary archipelago year round mild temperatures due to the south of the horse latitudes arising northeast trade winds. Especially during the day saturated with sea water air rises up on Teide massif. It formed in about 1,000 to 1,200 meters altitude clouds that condense when in contact with the local bay and pine forests to a fine drizzle.

By this fact, exist in the wine region Tacoronte- Acentejo diverse microclimates. Near the coast to a height of 550 m above weighs a dry and very warm climate. The vineyards at an altitude 550-1200 m (ie, up to the height of the clouds ) the climate is cooler and wetter. Above 1200 m the growing conditions are again dry. In cooler temperatures here mainly include temperature differences between day and night from clear and are the cultivation of structured white wines conducive.
