The Tallinn University of Technology ( TUT) (Estonian Tallinna Tehnikaülikool ( TTÜ ), English Tallinn University of Technology, formerly Tallinn Technical University) is Estonia the only technical university and one of the two or three most important universities in the country - according to research criteria together with the University of Tartu the leading. It is also one of the most important technical universities in Central and Eastern Europe and the new Member States of the European Union.

History

The Tallinn Technical University was founded shortly after the independence of Estonia in 1918 as an engineering school of Estonian Engineering Society, as the country did not have its own engineering education. 1919, the engineering school was a private college, in 1920 the state took over the institution. Since 1936, " Technical Institute Tallinn ", but with university status, the College in 1938 was a technical university.

Known members of the University

In addition to the overall technical elite of the country are among the alumni or professors at the University also numerous industrialists and businessmen, including the President of the Hansa Bank, the largest bank in the Baltics, Indrek Neivelt; the chairman of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Toomas Luman; and the former prime minister and major industrialist Tiit Vähi. Even the President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, Jüri Engelbrecht, is a member of the TUT.
