Tanjung Puting

The National Park Tanjung Puting is located in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan, in the south of the island of Borneo. The National Park goes back to two wildlife reserves, which were founded in the 1930s by the Dutch colonial government, and in 1978 merged to form the 305,000 -hectare Tanjung Puting Wildlife Reserve. This reserve was transformed in 1982 with the help of the environmentalist Birutė Galdikas in a national park. In 1977 it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In 1996, the park was expanded to its current size of 4150 km ².

Flora and Fauna

The national park protects about 6,000 orangutans, and thus is regarded as one of the most excellent refuges of this species in the world.
