Bunaken National Park

The Bunaken National Park ( Taman Nasional Bunaken Indonesian ) is an Indonesian reserve in the north-eastern tip of Sulawesi ( Sulawesi Utara ). He is around Bunaken Island ( Pulau Bunaken ), about 3 km off the mainland North Sulawesi near Manado. The park was established in 1997. His name already refers to his status as underwater National Park. It is located on the southeastern edge of the Celebes ( Sulawesi ).

The underwater park

The underwater national park of Bunaken covers an area of 750 km ² and further includes the islands of Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage and Nain. Here divers find one of the best diving areas in Indonesia. About 300 coral and 3000 fish species have been recorded here. Among a variety of sharks, there are gray reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and whale sharks, giant manta rays and giant morays. Impressive the enormous gash edges are in the sea depth (drop offs ). The depth varies 200-1840 meters.

The Islands

On " Manado " is a dormant volcano. Earlier, the Spanish and the Portuguese island served as a base in the spice trade. The island rises beyond 600 meters above sea level and is the highest point of the park represents the island " Nain " has a dome-shaped geomorphology and reaches a height of almost 140 meters above the sea. " Mantehage " however, is a flat island, which is why large-scale mangrove forests could make. Individual salt gullies separate the thicket occasionally. Protection measures

The Bunaken Park was proposed at the suggestion of Indonesia for the UNESCO World Heritage and has since been on the UNESCO list of suggestions In particular, it is hoped to be able to effectively meet the escalating so dynamite and cyanide fishing. WWF supports the protective measures in the park as part of the " Sulu Sulawesi Marine Eco - region Action Plan ".
