Sabangau National Park

The Sebangau National Park ( Indonesian: Taman Nasional Sebangau ) is a 580,000 -acre national park in Indonesia in the province of Central Kalimantan on Borneo. It consists largely of Torfmoorwäldern and is bounded by the rivers Katingan and the eponymous Sebangau.

Formation

The Sebangau National Park is located in the west of the former " Mega Rice Project" area. For this project, more than one million hectares Torfmoorwälder was cleared and drained in the 1990s. The open space should serve the cultivation of rice. The Torfmoorwälder on the territory of today's national parks have been cut down for years by 15 different companies before they were declared a National Park Sebangau 2004.

Current Situation

The Sebangau National Park is about 70 km wide and has a twelve -meter-thick " Torfdom ". About 4000 drainage canals run through the national park; they were once used to transport the felled trees. Torfmoorböden in the water level since normally extends to a few centimeters below the surface, such channels can lead to a drying out of the whole peat bog, which could cause serious burns after during the dry season. In Sebangau National Park, the channels are piece by piece with dams interrupted to reduce water runoff. About every 100 meters will be built for this purpose a dam. This measure leads to a re- greening of the landscape; around 2015, it is expected that the initial groundwater level is reached again.

The WWF lists 150 ha of national parks through a reforestation project, which is funded by the Deutsche Post since June 2011 by the Krombacher brewery. This is to be tested, for example, which trees are best for reforestation on the location where appropriate. About 400 trees are needed per hectare.

In addition, we endeavor by permanent sequestration of carbon a large reduction of GHG emissions.

Flora

Among the 166 identified plant species rarities like Ramin, the pitcher plant Nepenthes ampullaria, the Black Orchid and many medicinal plants are found.

Fauna

In the National Park, among other proboscis monkeys, sun bears, clouded leopards and orangutans occur. By protective measures the number of the latter increased again to 9000 animals. In 1995 there were 13,000, 2005, only 6900th Furthermore, 35 fish species, 106 bird species and 35 mammal species have been identified.
