Kutai National Park

The Kutai National Park is located on the island of Borneo, in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. It lies north of the Mahakam River and only 120 km from the provincial capital Samarinda.

The 198 604 -acre rain forest reserve is one of the last refuges of the endangered orangutans. The number of orangutans has declined sharply between 2004 and 2009, from 600 to 60 The national park is also home to many other mammalian species such as sun bear, sambar, banteng, Maronenlangur, Weißstirnlangur, trouser - Langur, Proboscis Monkey, Gray Gibbon, clouded leopard, marble cat, flat-headed cat, Yellow-throated marten, Otterzivette and Indian otter.

Large forest fires damaged 60 % of the forest in the El Niño years 1982/83 and 1997 /98.
