Tataouine Governorate

The governorate of Tataouine (Arabic تطاوين, DMG Tatawin ) is the southernmost and largest of the 24 governorates in Tunisia. The area is bounded on the north by the province Kebili and Medenine, in east Libya closes to the west Algeria. The area is 38,889 km ² (23.8% of the total area of Tunisia ), but it is just 148,000 people in this area. The capital of the region is the same Tataouine. The government in its current expansion has been established on March 2, 1981.

A large part of the south of the province is located in the Sahara Desert and is dominated by the sand dunes of the Erg. The economy of the region is, however, dominated by agriculture in the north, increasingly, the Sahara tourism plays a role. In addition, crude oil is produced in the southern area.

Parts of the Sahara region are restricted, the stay is permitted only with government approval.
