The Royal Family of Broadway is an American comedy film from the year 1931. The screenplay is based on the stage play The Royal Family by Edna Ferber and George Simon Kaufman.

Action

Julia Cavendish is a successful actress on Broadway. Her mother Fanny is the grand dame of the theater and her daughter Gwen will soon be on stage. Juliet's plan to end her career, encounters in society 's approval. Julia's brother Tony, who has taken the name of Cavendish, has gone to the film to Hollywood. Now he is incognito come back. The police are looking for him because he has violated a director at a scuffle on the set. In addition, he is still haunted by a young actress who wants to sue him for half a million dollars for breach of contract.

Tony's appearance brings chaos to the House of Cavendish. As also still the businessman Gilmore Marshall, an admirer of Julia's shows up, Julia takes the decision really quit acting. The manager of the Cavendish, Oscar Wolfe has, however, recognized a meeting with an author for this afternoon. Julia has to cancel her appointment with Gilmore. When Gwen gets her boyfriend Perry Stewart in dispute about their outlooks on life, she will not attend the meeting. Fanny says her daughter and her granddaughter, that family life is not a career, and that the successes they have Julia's alive. Meanwhile, Tony is looking for a way to leave the country. Gilmore gives him a fake ID. Disguised as a Page, he can dodge the fan crowd outside the house. Perry shows up, and Juliet asks her daughter on her to marry him.

As the new season dawns, Gwen has missed her stage debut to marry Perry. Even Julia has ended her career and married Gilmore. Only Fanny is still on the stage, against the advice of her doctor. Oscar is concerned that Julia would feel uncomfortable without the theater. In fact, Julia feels the same evening at eight clock when it normally stands on the stage, melancholic. When her Gilmore tells of his plans to move to the plains of the South American highlands, Julia thinks about their own plans. Gwen comes in and surprised Julia with the intention to play in Oscars piece while Perry is on a business trip.

Tony shows up, this time on the run from the Princess of Albania. He describes the action of a play whose script he bought. While Gilmore and Perry talk about business and the Cavendish with Oscar about the theater, they reached the news that Fanny has collapsed between two acts. All rush to the theater, but Fanny, who wanted to play the piece to the end, has died. Julia says goodbye to Gilmore to play the piece for her mother to the end.

Criticism

Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times described the film as consistently and wonderfully effective. The film run from a security and speed, which are crucial points in favor of production.

The play The Royal Family celebrated on 28 December 1927 at the Selwyn Theater in New York Premiere. This was followed by 345 performances of the play.
