Them Crooked Vultures is the title of the debut album by the supergroup of the same name, consisting of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones.
Background
Dave Grohl, lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Foo Fighters and John Paul Jones got to know in 2005 at an awards ceremony; Jones got from Grohl awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award. Even then, came to him the idea of a collaboration of the two musicians with the musical leader of the rock band Queens of the Stone Age Josh Homme. Homme and Grohl had worked together on the critically acclaimed Queens -of-the -Stone - Age album Songs for the Deaf. On his birthday in 2009, Grohl arranged a meeting between Jones and Homme. Here, the first plans for a joint music project originated. Was made public cooperation in early July by the Spinnerette frontwoman Brody Dalle, and shortly afterwards gave Jesse Hughes ( Eagles of Death Metal) the band's name known. As the album title was suspected because of a message on the band's website Never Deserved the Future.
Before the release of the album Them Crooked Vultures featured on their YouTube page promotional clip of excerpts of some songs. The first single New Fang was presented on 26 October 2009 full-length; there was the whole album three days before the official release date to hear on the internet.

Style
The on Them Crooked Vultures to listening music is largely based on impromptu jam sessions. The basic idea for a song came mostly from Homme, built on this the band then. The melody is usually specified by a guitar riff, but often modified by instrumental breaks within the pieces. The music magazine Rolling Stone described the musical style of the album as " bluesgeerdeten Hard Rock ", in the tradition of Led Zeppelin, but also of Hommes ' stoner- rock roots.

Commercial success
Them Crooked Vultures was able to place in the charts of 17 countries worldwide. The highest placing recorded the album in New Zealand with rank 2 Other top ten finishes were in Australia, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In the German Media Control Charts, it debuted at number 13.
The first single New Fang reached # 39 in the Canadian charts. The second single Mind Eraser, No Chaser could not place in the charts themselves.
Reviews
Them Crooked Vultures was recorded mostly positive to very positive. For a description of the sound, most critics drew the bands in which Grohl, Homme and Jones played or still play, as a reference approach; especially the music of Led Zeppelin, whose bassist was Jones, often served as a control.
So felt Frank Schaefer, author of the German Rolling Stone, reminiscent of some of the pieces of the hard rock band from the 1970s, for example, sword Elephants " almost like a Led Zep Collage ". In addition, most of the songs on the album were " not noticed particularly on recent albums by Queens of the Stone Age". Nevertheless, the musicians were not imitators of their own groups, "Here no style is cloned, but re-interpreted ". However, Shepherd feared that Them Crooked Vultures will have a rather short half-life and rated the album three out of five possible points.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine The critic of the portal Allmusic felt most of Them Crooked Vultures recalls Hommes musical projects, but praised the successful combination of the three; the chemistry between them agree. The album was " classicist, adventurous and undeniably exciting," which is why it received four stars out of five.
For the E -zine laut.de Eberhard Dobler rated the album also me four of five points and emphasizes the skills of the individual members as instrumentalists, songwriters and vocalists. Tour
Them Crooked Vultures played back in August 2009, several music festivals, but occasionally they also gave their own concerts. In October, the band embarked on a to February 2010 ( as well as two other dates in April ) permanent world tour called Deserve the Future Tour, which took them in early December 2009 to Munich, Berlin and Cologne. It was supported on the tour by the musician Alain Johannes, who was also involved in the recording of the album. As the opening act Troy Van Leeuwen's band appeared Sweethead.
