Tobaj (Hungarian identical ) is a municipality with 1431 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Güssing in Burgenland in Austria.

Geography

The municipality has an area of 58.1 Tobaj km ², making it geographically one of the largest communities in Burgenland. It is located in the southern part of the Burgenland in the Valley of Strem.

Tobaj has Pannonian climate.

The municipality comprises the following six localities ( in parentheses population as of 31 October 2011):

  • Hasendorf in Burgenland (82 )
  • Croatian Tschantschendorf (101 )
  • Punitz (321 )
  • Tobaj (299 )
  • Tudersdorf (46)

The community consists Tschantschendorf Hasendorf in Burgenland from the cadastral German, Croatian Tschantschendorf Punitz, Tobaj and Tudersdorf.

History

Tobaj is first mentioned in 1428 as Thobajd documented.

The place was - like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 - Hungary ( German West Hungary). After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon Treaty of 1919 Austria after tough negotiations.

The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

Mayor is Manfred Kertelics of the ÖVP. The mandate distribution of the 19 seats in the municipal council is: 12 ÖVP, SPÖ 6 & U and 1 FPÖ. Green and other lists no mandates.
