Tom Heinsohn

Thomas William Heinsohn ( born August 26, 1934 in Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American former basketball player and coach. In the NBA he won with the Boston Celtics eight championships as a player and two more as a coach. In 1986, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Heinsohn played in the NCAA for the Holy Cross Crusaders, at that time one of the best college teams, for which Bob Cousy had played. He was in the 1956 Draft selected by the Boston Celtics as a territorial pick, in the same year in which Bill Russell joined the Celtics from college. Heinsohn was elected after his first season as a Rookie of the Year and All-Star team in the Eastern Conference and won with the Celtics the first championship. Although the Celtics lost in the following season in the play- offs against the St. Louis Hawks, but won Heinsohn in the next seven years with the Celtics every time the NBA championship. In three seasons (1959 /60 to 1961/62 ) he was the best scorer of the Celtics, he also has four times the All- NBA Second Team ( 1960-1964 ) and after 1957 a further five times as a participant of the NBA All- Star Games (1961 -1965 ) was chosen. He distinguished himself above all by a constant pitch, for which he received by his fellow players nicknamed " Tommy Gun". For the first time head coach of the Celtics was Heinsohn 1969, after the big stars of the team had finished their careers.
