Tom Sherak

Tom Sherak ( born June 22, 1945 in New York City; † January 28, 2014 in Calabasas, California ) was an American film producer. He was 2009-2012 President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Life

Tom Sherak grew up in Brooklyn. During the Vietnam War he was drafted into the army, but had to spend as a Personnel Specialist in Fort Monroe in Virginia just two years. For a short time he worked on Wall Street. 1970 Sherak began his career in the film industry. He first worked in film distribution offices of Paramount Pictures in New York, Washington, DC and St. Louis. He then became chief film buyers the cinema chain General Cinema Corporation. In 1983 he came to 20th Century Fox. There he was over 18 years in the areas of Rental, marketing and post-production, most recently in the position of Chairman of 20th Century Fox Domestic Film Group. After that, he worked for seven years as a partner at Revolution Studios.

Tom Sherak had already been for many years a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when he was appointed to the Board of Governors in 2003. For one term he was treasurer. From 2009 to 2012, he was President of the Academy. He was succeeded by Hawk Koch. 2010 Sherak was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In November 2013 he began a career in the City Council of Los Angeles, in which he should provide incentives for the continuation of the film and television industry in Hollywood for a salary of one dollar per year.

Sherak was also known for his commitment to Multiple Sclerosis charities. His daughter Melissa has multiple sclerosis.

In 2001, she was diagnosed with prostate cancer Sherak. After he had undergone intensive chemotherapy in 2013, his health deteriorated again in early 2014. End of January 2014 he died at the age of 68 years. He left behind his wife and two daughters and a son.
