Tourism in Ukraine

Ukraine was in 2007 more than 23.1 million people visited ( 17.3 million of them tourists), mainly from Eastern Europe, but also from the EU ( 6.3 million ) and the USA. The country has a long tradition of mass tourism that began already in the middle of the 19th century. In Soviet times was the land, especially the Crimean peninsula, the most popular resort of the USSR.

Ukraine is at the crossroads of many historic routes between east and west, north and south. It has therefore collected the traces of several cultures, including Greek, Slavic, Jewish and German. The country has many attractive tourist cities and landscapes. The Ukrainian cuisine is very diverse and has included the elements of different European cuisines. The country also possesses great wine regions (see viticulture in Ukraine).

Travel

Ukraine is reachable in just two hours by plane from Germany. But there is also a continuous train from Berlin to Kiev, and depending on the day coaches to Lviv, Odessa, Simferopol, Kharkiv and Donetsk. Train and car travel within the country are very cheap. In addition to the train and intercity buses minibuses are the most important national transportation system in the private operators here is mostly a pre-registration required. Between the major Ukrainian cities, there are some daily, some several times a week flight connections, which are comparable in price with scheduled flights in Western Europe.

The national currency, the hryvnia (pronounced hryvnia ), is in all major cities now obtainable with Maestro cards or credit cards at ATMs.

Entry Requirements

Citizens of the European Union, Switzerland, the U.S. and Japan do not need a visa for a stay up to 90 days.

On 31 March 2005, the visa requirement for citizens of these countries was abolished for entry period 1 May 2005 to 1 September 2005, valid for at with a passport and for stays up to 90 days by order of the President. End of July 2005, the visa exemption was extended by presidential decree for an indefinite period. In addition, however, there is a requirement to have a valid health insurance for Ukraine. An entry with ID card is not possible.

Museum visits

In many museums is organized once a so-called Sanitärtag month. This is usually the first or last Monday or Friday of the month. The museums are closed.

The museum ticket offices usually close one hour before the specified closing times. Often there are special prices for tourists. This, however, is often no label or guide in English or any other language over.

Medical tourism

In Ukraine, many dental clinics with European standards of hygiene and modern equipment are located. They offer the patient of high quality dentures at affordable prices. Many citizens of the European Union and Russia take advantage of this offer.

Also popular are spa and plastic surgery.

Transportation

In every major city bus, tram, taxi and metro transport passengers to their destination. Buses and taxis ( called in Ukraine Marschrutka ) operating on regular service and are very reasonably priced at about 1-2 hryvnia (0.20 EUR ) per trip. Trams, the traditional mode of transport of the former Soviet Union, are to be found throughout the city and accompany the people of Kiev practically over the entire day's activities. On occasion, however, you should change to the Metro, because it is quicker. The Metro transported their passengers quickly and cheaply from the city center to the city end and vice versa. The tickets are for sale at an ATM. A single ticket on the metro costs 1.70 hryvnia (0.17 euros ), a monthly pass for unlimited Metro pleasure costs in Kiev 40 hryvnia (4 euros ). People are generally very friendly and curious when they meet foreigners. Accordingly, it is addressed as a tourist frequently, whether it be in the metro, in restaurants or markets.

Cities

  • Kiev - the capital and cultural center of the ancient Rus and the Ukraine today. Old churches and monasteries, wide boulevards, landscapes and cultural opportunities.   • Lviv - an ancient city in the west of the country, with its medieval old town and the original architecture with Polish and German influences.
  • Odessa - a port and trading city on the Black Sea with a wonderful atmosphere, resulting from the mixture of many cultures, among others, the Jewish, Greek and Armenian, was born.
  • Yalta - a famous seaside resort on the Black Sea, site of the historically significant Yalta Conference.
  • Chernihiv - capital of a medieval principality, many historical monuments and beautiful landscapes in the area.
  • Dnepropetrovsk - located on the Dnieper River, the city offers a nice mix of old and new.

Landscapes

  • Crimea - subtropical climate, famous seaside resorts, historical monuments and beautiful mountain scenery with plenty of hiking opportunities. Crimea is a famous wine-growing region with many quality brands (see Krimsekt ). Most popular vacation spots are Sevastopol, Yalta, Alushta, Evpatoria, Feodosia and Sudak.
  • Carpathian Mountains - impressive mountain scenery with hiking and skiing, spas with mineral water springs. Most popular vacation spots are Lviv, Truskawez and Kolomyja.
  • Azov coast - many seaside resorts, including Berdyansk and Melitopol.
  • Dnepr (Dnipro ) - cruises on this great river that pass many old towns and numerous landscapes.
  • Danube Delta - the longest river in Europe can be stunning, untouched nature with a variety of rare birds, such as Discover and watch pelicans.
  • Askania -Nova - founded in the German Friedrich von folding fine Biosphere live exotic animals such as buffalo, zebras, antelopes and Przewalski's horses in a natural setting.
