Treungen Line

Treungenbanen was a single-track, narrow-gauge at the opening of local railway in the southern Norwegian province of Aust -Agder. It ran between Treungen and the town of Arendal.

History

The course was designed by the NSB local train and built in Cape gauge to connect Arendal with the major towns on the Nidelva. 1908, the first section was opened by Froland, 1910 was extended to Åmli and 1913 reached the track Treungen. The branch line from Rise station to Grimstad was built as a private company, but later taken over by the NSB and operated as Grimstadbanen. On this branch line timber and ore were transported mainly, of course, in addition to passenger transport.

1935 reached the Sørlandsbanen Nelaug that Treungenbanen became her branch line. To be able to leave the Sørlandsbanen as an interim solution in Arendal end, Arendal Nelaug was converted to standard gauge. This stretch is under the name Arendalsbanen in 2007 still part of the Norwegian railway network. On 9 November 1935, the first train from Oslo West Station to Arendal. As guests were sailing under another king Håkon VII, Crown Prince Olav and Prime Minister Johan Nygaardsvold with. During a period of three years Arendal in southern Norway was the largest transfer point: travelers from Western Norway had here on the way to the capital from the steamer to the path change. Neither earlier nor later was there ever in Arendal as heavy traffic.

As long as the northern section was not normalspurig also, all goods had to be transhipped in Nelaug. Therefore, the northern section 1946 was also converted to standard gauge. The Ore Mine Søftestad was the largest customer of the railway line, several trains per week went from the mine to Arendal. The ores were then exported to Central Europe, especially Germany. For several years, the annual transport capacity approximately 30-40,000 tons of ore

In 1965 the mine was closed. 1967 the Storting decided to cease operating on the route between Nelaug and Treungen. The road link between Åmli and Nissedal was expanded, the web has been replaced by a bus route from Arendal in the western Telemark. 1969 began the dismantling of the northern section, today it is mostly a bike path. On the remaining distance between Nelaug and Simonstad today Holztransporte take place. The southern section to Arendal, today Arendalsbanen, was electrified in 1995.
