Triumph Toledo

Triumph Toledo ( 1972)

The Triumph Toledo is a car of the lower middle class, which was introduced in August 1970 as a cheaper version of the 1300, which was simultaneously replaced by the 1500. The Toledo had the same vehicle with the split front grille as the 1500, but instead of the dual round headlights rectangular, single headlights and gray plastic inserts in the grille. The rear of the vehicle matched the old 1300 with the exception of the rear lights, which were simpler and smoother at Toledo.

The biggest difference for 1300 was the step back from front wheel drive to rear-wheel drive via a rear rigid axle with coil springs, which should help to reduce production costs. The interior was also cheaper; the instrument panel consisted of a simple wooden board, were drilled into the openings for the simple instruments. However, the whole thing was a bit more luxurious than the contemporary compact car with its interior parts in black plastic.

Initially, there was the Toledo only as a two-door sedan with four-cylinder in-line engine with 1296 cc displacement, the (43 kW) gave a power output of 58 bhp at 5300 min -1. He had drum brakes on all four wheels; there was no overdrive and no automatic transmission.

Not much later came out a four-door export version that was equipped with a 1.5-liter R4 engine ( 1493 cc ) with single carburetor (61 bhp / 45 kW) or dual carburetors (64 bhp / 47 kW). As of August 1971 there were these models in the UK.

The two-door model differed in appearance only slightly from the more popular four-door. The two-door was not until 1973 at the corners of the vehicle led bumper, while the four-door model from the beginning had the more modern bumper. In addition, the two-door still had two bumper horns, but were dropped at the turn of 1972/1973.

Over time, the model was improved in details. So it was from October 1972 standard disc brakes and from the year 1973/1974 heated rear windows.

In March 1975, the two-door fell off, the four-door model was further expanded with a number of improvements for one year. The three-lane transmission, which came from the Herald, was replaced by the single-track transmission of the Spitfire 1500 and the car got a new clutch. The redesigned Toledo received side trim, a black instead of the silver-colored grille and stainless steel trim on the roof edge. The equipment has been improved; there was now equipped with a standard dimming interior mirror, a warning light for unfastened seat belts, folding front seats (previously only on request ), double reversing lights (previously only on request ), a cigarette lighter, a hazard warning system and an exterior mirror on the driver's side. A laminated glass windscreen, front head restraints and seats made of brushed nylon were available on request. In March 1976, the Dolomite sparked 1300/1500 the Toledo to 119 182 copies from. Of these, 113 294 pieces 1.3 -liter models and only 5,888 pieces 1.5-liter models. Thus, the Toledo is one of the best selling sedans of triumph. The last, very well equipped Toledo are now often referred to as Dolomite 1300 with a small trunk.

CKD kits of Toledo were still bolted together in 1977 from New Zealand motor for the New Zealand market and often not until 1978 that authorized for marketing. This late Toledo had some improvements made after 1976 Dolomite, such as their silver-colored grille and rubber strips on the sides of the vehicle. However, they retained the shorter body of Toledo.

Technical improvements were at Toledo as rare as cosmetic. In October 1971, the engine compression at 1.5 l of 8.5 has been raised 1 thing (45 kW) to 64 bhp (47 kW) had the power of 61 bhp increase: 1 to 9.0. As of October 1972, the previously supplied only on request front disc brakes were standard equipment and in March 1975 received the TC ( Two carburetor model ) has a higher compression and made 71 bhp (52 kW).

The performance figures were average, the maximum moved 137-145 km / h ( even if the speedometer of 1500 clearly indicated more ), acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 17.1 sec completed the 1300, the 1500 TC in 13.6 sec

Triumph developed a 1500 TC 1973 as a two -door model. But he never went into production.
