Tsuyama, Okayama

Tsuyama (Japanese津 山 市, -shi) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Okayama.

Geography

Tsuyama is located in the northern part of Okayama Prefecture, north of Okayama and south of Tottori. The northern and western parts of the city lie at the edge of the Chugoku Mountains. The mountains are 1000 to 1200 meters high.

History

Tsuyama Castle was city and capital of the province Mimasaka. The city of Tsuyama was (西 苫 田村,二 宫 村,院 庄村) of the district Tomata and a village (福冈 村) founded on 11 February 1929 from the union of two municipalities (津 山 町,津 山东 町) and 3 villages of the district Kume. Tsuyama was not destroyed by the Pacific War, the castle town character ( in part) has been preserved.
