Turňa nad Bodvou

Turňa Bodvou ( Tornau German, Hungarian Torna ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia near the Hungarian border, about 10 kilometers west of the town of Moldava nad Bodvou located.

The village lies at the eastern end of the Slovak Karst and marks the beginning of the Košice kotlina ( Kassa pool). Through the town flows the Bodva and gives the south of the community running hills Bodvianska pahorkatina the name, this opens the river Turňa here in the Bodva.

In the community there is a strong Hungarian minority ( 2001, about 44 %) and a smaller minority of Roma. In 1991, more than 60 % of the population reported Hungarian as their nationality, being a not insignificant part at that time belonged to the unrecognized minority of Roma and Sinti.

History

The town was first mentioned in records in 1198. By 1881 the city was the seat of the historic county Tornau and was regarded as a city with a population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants in 1851.

Until 1918 the village belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award they came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.

From 1920 to 1927, the place was known officially as Turňa, from 1927 to 1990 Turna nad Bodvou ( with an interruption during the re- affiliation to Hungary, then Torna ). From 1964 to 1990 he was incorporated along with the village Haj in place Turnianska Nová Ves.
