Zachi Ha - Negbi Hebrew צחי הנגבי ( born February 26, 1957 in Jerusalem) is an Israeli politician and a former minister.
After schooling the son of MKs Geula Cohen made initially from 1974 to 1977 his military service in the armed forces ( IDF) in the Paratroopers Brigade ( Hativat HaTzanhanim ) before a degree in international relations and law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem joined, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) and a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ). During this time, he was the first from 1979 to 1980 President of the Student Union at the Hebrew University and then to 1982 president of the National Union of Students.
After graduation, he was admitted to the bar, but entered the government service, where he was initially 1983-1984 Assistant to the Minister of Transport Chaim Corfo and then advisor to Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir. Between 1986 and 1988, he was then director of the office of Prime Minister Shamir.
His political career began on 21 November 1988, when Hanegbi was first elected to the Knesset members and which he belongs, except for a brief interruption from December 2005 to April 2006 until today as a representative of the Likud. On June 18, 1996, he was appointed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as health minister for the first time in a government and held that office until 12 November 1996. However, he was appointed at the same time the Minister of Justice on 4 September 1996 and held this position for almost three years until July 6, 1999 held. During his tenure, it came on 10 January 1997 on the controversial appointment of Ronni Bar-On to the Attorney General, but gave up due to the large critique of this office already after 55 hours. In 1997 he was also Chairman of the Central Committee of the Likud.
From 7 March 2001 until 28 February 2003 he was not only the environment minister in the government of Ariel Sharon, but at the same time on 15 December 2002 until 28 February 2003, Minister of Transport. As Environment Minister he dealt among other things with the problem of water scarcity due to the shrinking of the Dead Sea. In the following Sharon's government Hanegbi was until September 6, 2004 Secretary of Homeland Security and as such was responsible for security in Palestine and last until May 4, 2006 Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
In the last Knesset elected on 17 April 2006, he is Chairman of the Committee on Foreign matter and defense. Currently Hanegbi heard, which was founded in 2005 by Sharon, Kadima.
In late 2006, he was accused to have claimed during his tenure as Minister of the Environment unjustified 69 members of the Likud in government offices, which is why charges were brought against him.
