Ugo Mifsud Bonnici

Ugo Mifsud Bonnici ( born November 8, 1932 in Cospicua / Malta) is a Maltese politician and served as 1994-1999 President of Malta.

Studies and professional activities

Mifsud Bonnici studied law at the Royal University of Malta and earned a Bachelor of Arts there in 1952 and in 1955 a Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ). After the end of his studies, he worked as a lawyer and earned admitted to all courts of Malta.

Political career

Member of Parliament

In 1966, he ran successfully for the first time for the NP in the parliamentary elections and stepped in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, who was also a lawyer and member of Parliament from 1924 to 1933 for the DNP and later the NP was.

From 1966 until his resignation as Member of Parliament on 4 April 1994 he was a representative of the constituency 2, which included the cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, Senglea, Kalkara and Fgura. He was from 1972 to 1987 Speaker of the NP of Education and in 1977 President of the Party Council. As a Member of Parliament, he took part an active role in legislation and was a member of several committees such as the Constitutional Committee. Minister

After the electoral victory of the NP in the parliamentary elections on 9 May 1987, the then Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami appointed him as Minister of Education. After another victory at the NP in the parliamentary elections on 22 February 1992, he was appointed by Prime Minister Fenech Adami to the Minister of Education and Human Resources. This office he held until his election as President of the Republic of Malta.

During his tenure as Minister Mifsud Bonnici Dr compiled from important legislation such as the Education Act, the Environment Act, the National Archives Act and the Act on Promotion of occupational health and safety at work.

President of Malta

On April 4, 1994, Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was the successor of Censu Tabone President of Malta. This office he held from then until the end of the five-year term and was born on April 4, 1999 by the former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Guido de Marco replaced.
