United States Astronaut Hall of Fame
The Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville, Florida is a public ceremony site for astronauts. It houses the world's largest collection of memorabilia of the astronauts and is part of the Visitor Complex at Kennedy Space Center.
History
In the 80s of the last century, the six surviving Mercury Seven members decided to erect a memorial exclusively for astronauts. The Mercury Seven Foundation and Astronaut Scholarship Foundation took over the patronage of this project. On 29 October 1990, the Hall of Fame was opened, had to close briefly for bankruptcy in the meantime in 2002, but was reopened after NASA took over the sponsorship.
Exhibits
Issued Sigma 7, the Mercury spacecraft by Walter Schirra and the command module of Apollo 14 are
Furthermore, the space suit and other items from the mission Mercury - Redstone 4 was issued by Virgil Grissom. After the bankruptcy, there was a legal repercussions to the ownership of these exhibits, as the family of Grissom NASA did not want to allow you to take these things in their possession.
Members
Members are all seven Mercury astronauts and 37 astronauts of the Gemini and Apollo project. In addition, twenty-two Space Shuttle astronauts currently a member of the Hall of Fame.
