Uvarovo, Tambov Oblast

Uwarowo (Russian Уварово ) is a town in Tambov Oblast (Russia) with 26,830 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies in the southeast of the Oka -Don plain about 120 km southeast of Oblasthauptstadt Tambov on the right bank of Worona, a right tributary of the opening into the Don Chopjor.

Uwarowo the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Uwarowo was founded in 1699 by Cossacks. The name is derived from the surname Uvarov.

1770 postal route Borisoglebsk - Kirsanof was led by Uwarowo, so it evolved into a regional trading center in the course of the 19th century.

Culture and sights

In the nearby village Iwanowka there is a museum for the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, who temporarily lived there in the early 20th century on the estate of his cousin and wife and worked.

In the village of Staraya Olschanka are the remains of the estate of the noble family Wojeikow on which often the painter Vasily Polenov and his sister, the painter and illustrator Jelena Polenova stayed.
